Food: If you are looking for a good honest steakhouse experience that is, pardon the pun, a cut above the rest, you will find it at Ruths Chris Steakhouse in Honolulu. Top quality beef, generous, family style side dishes, and rich desserts await you.
We began with a pleasant shrimp cocktail, consisting of about 5 shrimp with a zesty homemade cocktail sauce. This was good, a typical shrimp cocktail appetizer, although not sensational.
For our entrees, we ordered the filet (12oz.) and the ribeye (14 oz.) both prepared medium rare. As promised, they arrived to our table sizzling on piping hot plates. As the steaks are decadently broiled with butter, we warned by our server to hold our napkins over us to protect us from any butter that might jump ship. The warning was not in vain.
As for the taste of the steaks, everything that you have heard about Ruths Chris Steakhouse is true. The beef is top quality, it is served piping hot, and your knife will cut through it like proverbial butter. The actual butter that tops your steak makes the whole experience extremely satisfying; the height of comfort food. We found the filet to be especially tender and cut far thicker than any filet we have ever seen before.
The steaks do not come with any accompaniments, but there are plenty of sides available, from soups, salads, and potatoes virtually any style. We would recommend (as will likely your server) to order sides to share, as they are prepared family-style. We had the cheesy Au Gratin Potatoes, smothered with a cream sauce and sharp cheddar, and a virtuous order of steamed brocolli. The potatoes were quite good, although we found that had they been served scalloped rather than cubed, they might have been more satisfying (and a little less “tough”).
Dessert was the aptly named Chocolate Sin Cake. A dark, rich confection, this cake was a fitting end to an evening of indulgence. And of course, we had to have the fine French pressed 100% Kona coffee.
Exceptional Features: The top-quality steak is truly sizzling when it arrives at your table. There is nothing superficial about it: your steak will be a hot and flavorful throughout your entire meal.
Service: Excellent, friendly and attentive service. Thorough knowledge of the menu.
Décor: The décor at Ruth’s Chris in Honolulu is more upscale than a typical family steakhouse. The walls are of dark wood, as you might expect, but the feeling is decidedly simple and elegant. Thick white linen table cloths complete the simple but fine-quality vibe of the dining room. Seating is a combination of free-standing tables and chairs and tables with a cushioned bench along one side.
Dress Code: The Ruths Chris website states that the dress code is “casual to dressy”, and that just about says it all. You’ll find a range here, with some even sporting shorts. Business casual would be appropriate middle ground.
Price: Expensive, with steak entrees in the $30 range (no accompaniments).
Reservations: Reservations are recommended.
Overall Dining Experience: Excellent, 4 and 1/2 barrels.
