We recently dined at The Albert, a lively, contemporary restaurant and bar located on the main floor of the Hotel EMC2 in downtown Chicago. We were staying at the hotel, so we’d made the choice partly out of convenience on the first night of our trip.
Both hotel and non-hotel guests alike were streaming in and out, adding to the fun, energetic atmosphere suggested but the quirky library/science lab theme. (The entire hotel abounds with a whimsical science references, from its name to overall decor.)
The Albert seems to be a popular destination for an after work or evening drink-and-a-nosh. Based on our meal and our experience, we can see why – great service, an appealing menu, and delicious food.
We did have reservations, but after a day of travel decided to try our luck and headed there early. Getting a table wasn’t a problem, but The Albert was certainly hopping and became busier as the evening progressed. (Bottom line – a reservation can never hurt!)
We began with drinks and a delish charcuterie, the Salumi plate featuring cured meats and cheeses. It was also served with a lovely fig jam, Cerignola olives, and incredibly delectable morsels of garlicky bread charred on the grill.
The menu is Italian-inspired, so we kept to Italian wine, sipping on Barbaresco by the glass to accompany our meals.
For him, a rich and hearty homemade pasta dish: Tagliatelle with braised veal, Angus beef, a chianti reduction and a healthy dusting of parmigiana cheese. Very satisfying!
I had the even richer homemade Ravioli stuffed with four cheeses, swimming in a delicious white truffle cream sauce. The gorgeous-looking drizzle is a balsamic glaze, and all topped up with truffle shavings.
We both agreed afterward that we could have stopped at the Salumi plate and been completely satisfied, but the pasta dishes were nevertheless quite wonderful. Glad to have sampled the main courses!
This dinner was our one and only time at The Albert during our whirlwind four-day stay in Chicago. The restaurant is however open daily for breakfast, for brunch on weekends, and as mentioned has a popular bar with an inviting daily Happy Hour. Consider stopping in whether you’re a guest at the Hotel EMC2, or simply find yourself in the vicinity of the Magnificent Mile.
